Nuclear Medical Technologist

Nuclear Medicine Technologists acquire, prepare and administer radioactive pharmaceuticals, which according to their chemical make-up will be selectively taken up by various organs in the body. Nuclear Medical Technologists use these radioactive materials and large machines with computers, which are called gamma cameras to "see" organ images, body functions, and assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Skilled in patient care, nuclear medicine technologists instruct patients prior to medical procedures. Under the direction of a physician, they calculate dosages and administer appropriate radioactive drugs. In addition, therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals are administered to treat various disease states. Technologists also must document the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
